Triumphing Over Sinful Fear. By John Flavel
Everyone experiences fear from time to time. Some fear is natural since it is part of living in a fallen and broken world. Yet, often this natural fear turns into sinful fear, a fear that paralyzes us and leaves us feeling helpless and hopeless. Frequently, this fear stems from a fear of man, caring more about what man thinks of us than what God thinks of us. It is this issue that John Flavel, Puritan minister in England in the 1600’s, confronts in his short little work Triumphing Over Sinful Fear.
Endeavoring to convert a believer’s sinful fear into the fear of the Lord, Flavel describes the types of fear, the causes of sinful fear, the effects of sinful fear, and the remedies for sinful fear. Knowing that Christians are prone to lose sight of God in the midst of their suffering, he urges believers to replace their fear of man with the fear of the Lord, looking to Him whose power and wisdom and love are able to supplant all their fears. This short book, edited so that it is easy to digest for the modern reader, will greatly buoy your soul in the midst of the storms of life and enable you to triumph over sinful fear!
