The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment. By Tim Challies
The church today is bombarded with a deluge of information on how to live the Christian life, how to do church, how to impact culture, and how to think about a variety of issues. Numerous books and a multitude of resources are available online and in bookstores. Have you ever wondered how to wade through all of those materials to know which are truly trustworthy, truly biblical, and truly able to promote your growth and sanctification? What is needed is a robust discipline of discernment and it is this topic that Tim Challies addresses in his book The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment.
The Word of God frequently commends the skill of thinking biblically about life like the Bereans who examined the Scriptures daily to see whether the things Paul taught them were true (Acts 17:11). Likewise, Paul exhorted the Thessalonians to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good” (1 Thess 5:21). If we are to be a people who show love for the Lord by faithfully serving him, this is a discipline we must practice and Challies’ book will assist you in understanding and cultivating spiritual discernment.
