We exist to display God's glory, declare God's truth, delight in God's Son, and disciple God's people

A Question About Marriage and the Resurrection

Matthew 22:23-33

Last Week – Trap #1 (Political)

Trap #2 (Theological)
1.  The Conniving Question – Vs. 28
.          The Sadducees
.          .     Theological opposite of the Pharisees who were traditionalists
.                They are  the religious liberals, religious aristocracy, secularists
.          .     Denied resurrection, angels (Acts 23:80), and the whole OT except the Torah
.          .     Controlled the temple
.          .            Hated Jesus: for cleansing their temple from the moneychangers
.          .                                     for teaching about heaven, hell, the afterlife, resurrection
.          .    .          .    .          .     for coming into Jerusalem claiming to be King
.          .     Their question concerned Levirate marriage – Deuteronomy 25:5-7, Genesis 38
.          .    .       It was designed to ridicule rather than to get an answer
2.  The Clarifying Response – Vs. 29
.          .     They do not understand Scripture
.          .     They do not understand the power of God
.          .              Life in the resurrection is not like life on earth – Vs. 30 (no  marriage in heaven)
.          .     The Scripture – Vss. 31-32
.          .              ‘Have you not read?’ (Exodus 3:6)
.          .    .          .     Job 19:25, Psalm 16:9-11, Isaiah 26:19, Daniel 12:2
3.  The Confounded Reaction  – Vss. 33 (34)

Two Implications
1.  It is possible to believe both the Scriptures and the power of God and yet be extremely wrong
2.  Jesus teaches us to look beyond this life
